The Ever-present Question

...will I have enough yarn?

I wore my Nantucket Jacket to Knitsmiths yesterday, and I love it! Unfortunately there was never a photo shoot; maybe today while the babies are sleeping and there is still some sun... well, there won't be any sun today, but some daylight is seeping past the snowflakes.

Despite the fact that there are no pictures to prove it, I can still move on to thinking about my next project... right? Over the summer Thea gave me this alpaca blend yarn.

She said that it was enough for a sweater, but with no ball bands and no other information it was tough to tell. I'd hate to knit a sweater, the whole time wondering "Will I have enough yarn?".

What is a former biochemist turned knitter to do? Pull out the analytical scale of course! First step, measure off one yard of yarn and weigh it.

Next step, weigh each ball and figure out total amount of yarn I have in grams.

After that, convert to yards using data previously acquired in step one.

Next step, take a moment to admire the pattern I want to knit

This is "Divine" from the cover of one of the new Sublime books

Last step, compare amount of yarn needed for pattern (9 balls Sublime DK = 1143yds) to amount that I calculated I own (1541.6 yards). Do a little dance for joy and then still worry that there won't be enough.

I know my scale isn't accurate to many decimal places, but really, could I be off by 400 yards... it's doubtful. Now to cast on... oh right, not yet...

I have a "knit-for-hire" sweater that I'm finishing for someone. I've made myself promise to knit one of the sleeves for that sweater before starting on this new one... it's going to be tough, but I must be disciplined!
